Understanding Demand Power

Below are several frequently asked questions about our Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) and intelligent power management.

Uninterrupted power is electricity delivered without any blips, voltage sags or flickers. It is an ongoing flow of power to your facility so you can keep operating your business and supplying your product to your valued customers. An Uninterruptible Power Supply means no more costly stopping and starting of equipment, and no more spoilage from unfinished goods.

Power reliability is generally a measurement of your uptime as provided by your utility. This includes both sustained outages (over 5 minutes) and momentary outages (less than 5 minutes). General statistics regarding your local electric company performance can be found on their website or by calling them directly.

Power quality is a measurement of the power supplied to you and how close it is to perfect power. Perfect power constitutes power at ideal current, voltage, and harmonic levels. Generally, industrial power quality solutions can only be measured by highly accurate Power Quality Meters (PQM) that are different than your utility meter.

This is accomplished by installing a facility-wide double conversion online Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS power backup). This way, all of the electricity used by your site goes through and is cleaned by the UPS. This solution provides power quality and an emergency backup power supply to your facility when the main power from the grid fails. The system is connected in line with the utility and it has zero transfer time to backup power. Contact our Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing Daniel McCormick if you have any questions about our custom UPS solutions.

Power interruptions abruptly shut down machinery. After that, these machines need to be powered up again so you can get back into production.  Every shutdown adversely impacts machinery and shortens its lifespan, which results in higher expenses for manufacturers.  Uninterrupted power means no more machinery shutdowns and, therefore, a lowering of your costs. With our UPS battery backup solution, not only can you get backup power for an organized shutdown, but you can also address voltage and harmonic issues from the grid that could be damaging your equipment.

Demand Power can responsibly install a generator at a customers’ facility.  This emergency generator backup power supply can provide extended ‘standby’ power. This is ideally suited for Food and Beverage Processing, Hospitals and Healthcare Facilities, and Educational Institutions. Through backup generation sources, Demand Power solutions provide up to 100% of the energy to your facility using the generator during peak periods. The generator solution would be environmentally compliant for use throughout the year.

Demand Power bundles your variable electricity rates. In Ontario, that is your Global Adjustment (‘GA’) price and your Hourly Energy price (‘HOEP’). In its place, you’ll be charged for a fixed cost of power for the duration of our agreement. This protects you from future power price increases and provides peace of mind.

If you have the flexibility to self-curtail your facility operations or disrupt production, you can reduce your demand in coincident peak hours. This is a limited form of demand management that can reduce energy costs at the cost of production efficiency. With energy storage, Demand Power designs solutions to provide 100% of the electricity to your facility for at least two continuous hours while reducing your load contribution to the coincident peak.

The customer will see their new, guaranteed rate of power the day that the solution is installed or when we agree to start the retail contract. Learn more about Our Process.

How much does our Uninterruptible Power Supply cost? Ultimately, Demand Power provides our industrial UPS systems as a no-cost service to our clients. The customer bears no cost to enter into this agreement. We simply require some of the customer’s time to review and negotiate the contract.

Our lithium phosphate batteries are charged with grid power. Charging can be from two to six hours typically at night-time between 10pm to 6am local time when power prices are cheaper and when the customer’s demand is lower. The system recharging does not cost your company.

Our industrial UPS system can move to your new location and keep providing you the benefits of the installation. Demand Power would simply extend our agreement to recover the cost of the move and to accommodate for the time lost while moving the system.

Demand Power industrial UPS systems are primarily used during the day, at peak times, to avoid expensive and very often, dirtier power. Additionally, they are recharged at night when grid demand is lower. Consequently, this helps the grid and the environment. Commercial battery storage generally charges within off-peak hours when there is an abundance of emissions-free generation such as wind. Thus by shifting your site consumption through battery power storage solutions, you are utilizing a higher proportion of low emission generation and can lower your CO2 footprint.

A battery energy storage solution provides backup power with no emissions compared to backup generator sets. Solar panel battery storage provides an integrated green solution of energy for your company.

Yes. Many customers reference our installation as a part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. This is because it is a system that helps the grid and the environment.

Our UPS system will be installed at your site and as close as possible to your electrical room. The UPS power system is housed outdoors and can be branded to reflect your company. Sitting outside, our smart energy system module consists of a 20’ or 40’ x 8’ x 8’ enclosure. The installation is versatile and can be installed in a parking garage, next to your building, or in a customized location on-site next to or inside your facility. Available in containers, multiples or stackable, our size can be as small as 500KW to larger than 10MW. We work with you to select the most suitable location for you and your company. The system is generally the size of a 40’ container but the system size is relative to the size of your facility and your power demand.

Demand Power’s solution is different versus the standard behind-the-meter solution. It uses On-Line Uninterruptible Power Supply’s (UPSs) with battery connections ensuring that no power switches or outages can occur.
